SUMMARY:Mapping & Assessing Personal Progress (MAPP) with Mike Sissons
DESCRIPTION:Mapping & Assessing Personal Progress (MAPP) is a suite of materials to facilitate the planning\, assessment and recording of progress in relation to personal learning intentions. \nWhats New in this ‘Semi-Formal’ edition of MAPP?\n\nMAPP (Semi-Formal) spreadsheets now generate longitudinal data which provide a graphic presentation of individual progress over time. This process is automated so that no additional administrative burden is placed on teachers.\nLongitudinal data can be transferred from each individual record to a cohort sheet to facilitate reporting and whole school analysis of progress.\nThe MAPP Milestone Statements have been comprehensively rewritten and expanded.\nA completely new section provides guidance on the implementation of MAPP and addresses the key issue of how to demonstrate that progress is good or better within a framework of personalised assessment.\n\n

SUMMARY:Defining Learner Characteristics with James Waller
DESCRIPTION:How We Clearly Identify Learners Who Will Benefit From a Different Curriculum Model\nIn this online workshop we will explore the specific characteristics Schools and Curriculum Leaders could take into account in order to understand the specific profiles of their learners with complex SEND\, beyond the usual ‘labels’ of PMLD\, SLD and MLD. We will consider which characteristics of learning (including developmental assessment) might be valuable in defining provision to meet those needs at either an individual level or in defining specific curriculum pathways (for larger SEN bases and special schools). \nThis will support schools in defining the accurate use of the Equals curriculum models (Pre-Formal\, Informal\, Semi-Formal) as well as other alternative curriculums and schemes of work. \n

SUMMARY:Process Based Teaching with Peter Imray
DESCRIPTION:Process Based Teaching sits as the cornerstone of all three of the Equals Multi-Tiered Curriculums\, namely Pre-Formal\, Informal and Semi-Formal. \nThe pedagogical base that underpins Process Based Teaching is not new however\, going well back into the 1950’s with the Reggio Emilia approach in Italy\, and is based on the principles of respect\, responsibility and community\, through exploration\, discovery and play. Learners learn by doing\, with teaching staff being unconcerned with product (getting things right\, especially in the short term). Teachers are enablers and facilitators\, guiding learners towards self-discovery over time – the more they do\, the more they learn! \nThe webinar looks at this highly practical approach to teaching that has established research based success\, and argues that it not only puts every learner at the centre of their own education\, but inevitably leads to high levels of self-esteem\, self-confidence\, self-regulation and independence. \n

SUMMARY:Logically Illogical – Information and insight into Autism with Ros Blackburn
DESCRIPTION:LIVE session only\nIn this online session Ros talks about living with autism. Ros herself was diagnosed as being severely autistic at just over a year old. Now in her 50s\, she tends to feel that while many areas of her autistic condition have remained very severe\, others such as her severe language delay have disappeared almost completely. \nIn the session Ros will give an invaluable insight into her world of autism. She uses humour and gives graphic examples of her experiences and talks about all aspects of living and working with autism. She describes the fun she has as well as the ways autism continues to restrict her life and the constant support she needs to have. \n

SUMMARY:Semi-Formal Curriculum with Peter Imray
DESCRIPTION:The Equals Semi-Formal Curriculum is set in the context of Equals multi-tiered curriculum approach\, recognising that differentiation from England’s (or indeed any) National Curriculum is NOT sufficient to meet the needs of pupils and students with profound\, complex\, severe or global learning difficulties \nFor these populations\, who are all working consistently and over time below or very near the start of their national curriculum\, curricula NEED TO be different rather than differentiated\, because the way such pupils learn is different\, and often very\, very different from neuro-typical\, conventional developing learners for whom the national curriculum was designed. \nThis session addresses the issues facing teachers and learners who are unable to master literacy and numeracy to a degree that will enable them to succeed within the National Curriculum. This is not a differentiated model\, this is different model\, because it recognises that those with SLD learn differently\, and if they learn differently\, we ought to be teaching them differently and teaching them different things. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Engagement: Using the Model and Understanding Motivators with James Waller
DESCRIPTION:Do you have strategies for engaging learners with Complex Executive Functioning\, Communication and Behavioural Needs? \nDo you know how to use the areas of Engagement to support the learning of those with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties? \nThe first half of this session will recap the main principles from the statutory approach to assessment for those with PMLD and those not yet fully accessing subject specific learning or the content of the national curriculum.. The second half of the session will involve sharing how to develop and use engagement motivators across a range of domains to develop practical ideas around how you might use the model to support bespoke provision development for all pupils with complex needs regardless of statutory assessment level. In this part of the session we will share the bespoke use of engagement motivators to design provision originally developed at Sunningdale School more than 6 years ago. This will include simple strategies for reflecting on different aspects of provision with greater depth so that potential for engagement and learning can be maximised. \n

SUMMARY:Teaching The World Around Me with Peter Imray
DESCRIPTION:The World About Me – Equals Semi-Formal Curriculum pathway. \nThe topic based subject entitled The World About Me is quite markedly different from the other subjects in the Equals Semi-formal Curriculum in that\, by extending learners’ understanding of learning beyond that which is immediately apparent\, it is more about learning for learning’s sake. When asked for example\, where chips come from\, it is perfectly feasible that most learners with SLD would reply\, assuming that they are able to reply at all – from MacDonald’s; or where milk comes from – the fridge; or where water comes from – the tap. \nThe principles we’re concerned with might therefore be regarded as presenting a holistic understanding of everyday events\, activities and experiences and about making the connections between these events\, activities and experiences. But beware\, this is not topic based teaching as you might already understand it – in line with all of the other ‘subjects’ in the Equals Semi-Formal Curriculum\, the principles in The World About Me are different. \n

SUMMARY:Rethinking Challenging Behaviour in Schools with Andy Baker
DESCRIPTION:What if the behaviours we find most difficult aren’t the problem – but the clue? \nThis session invites educators to rethink how they understand and respond to behaviour\, challenging the limits of traditional reward and sanction systems. Rather than asking “How do we stop this behaviour?”\, we explore a more useful question: “What is this behaviour telling us?” \nThrough a mindset-led\, integrative therapeutic approach\, Andy Baker will unpack how stress\, unmet needs\, developmental differences\, and past experiences shape behaviour in the classroom. The session will offer a practical framework to help staff move from reacting to behaviour towards understanding and influencing it more effectively. \nExpect a blend of insight\, reflection\, and practical strategies that support prevention\, de-escalation\, and stronger relationships – helping schools create environments where both staff and pupils can thrive.

SUMMARY:A Journey Through The Sensory Projects: From Listening to Choice to Exploring Belonging with Dr Jo Grace
DESCRIPTION:Dr Jo Grace has led The Sensory Projects for more than a decade\, in this time the projects have grown from just one project: The Sensory Stories Project to Five even Six projects (depending on how you count them!) Each project has focused on people described as having profound and multiple learning disabilities and has sought to innovate or deepen understanding. The Sensory Projects have won multiple awards and influenced practice internationally in the field of profound disability. \nDr Jo will join us for two sessions during which she will chart the history of the projects sharing practical tips from them and exploring their philosophical foundations. We begin with how The Sensory Story project listened to choice from people with profound disabilities in a meaningful way and end with Jo’s recent adventures exploring Belonging for and with people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. \nThis is a two part session – the 2nd part will run on Wednesday 14th October 2026

SUMMARY:Pre-Formal (PMLD) Curriculum with Peter Imray
DESCRIPTION:The Pre-Formal curriculum has been written specifically for learners of all ages (that is\, 2 to 92) with PMLD\, recognising that such learners may be the very hardest to reach and teach\, and therefore require a highly specialised and individualised curriculum model. \nIt is entirely process based\, concerning itself with the process of communication\, cognition\, sensory awareness\, self-determination\, physical well-being and creative exploration \nThe Pre-Formal Curriculum was updated in January 2026.

SUMMARY:Teaching My Play and Leisure for Semi-Formal Learners with Peter Imray
DESCRIPTION:My Play and Leisure for learners of all ages working within Equals Semi-Formal Curriculum pathway. \nThe long list of difficulties faced on a daily basis by learners of all ages with SLD\, may explain why such learners struggle to play\, but there is of course\, a chicken and egg scenario here\, since the fact that such learners struggle to play may also contribute to the establishment and continued existence of these limiting conditions. If we can teach learners with SLD (and SLD/ASD) to play\, we may thereby help them to break into effective social communication\, creative thinking\, problem solving\, formulating and maintaining relationships\, purposeful self-engagement\, narrative and storytelling\, theory of mind\, developing self-confidence\, self-belief and self-esteem. \nThis webinar explores the issues of age-appropriateness\, free play\, structured play\, staff involvement and direction\, resources\, time allocation and of course\, the huge importance of taking Play (with a capital P) seriously as a central and core Curriculum subject. \n

SUMMARY:Masking and Misunderstanding with Abigail Hawkins the SENsible SENCO
DESCRIPTION:Masking is increasingly recognised across a range of needs\, yet it is still frequently overlooked or misinterpreted in educational settings. This session explores how and why pupils mask\, what this can look like in practice\, and the risks when needs are misunderstood or missed entirely. \nDrawing on current research and classroom experience\, the session will consider the impact of masking on wellbeing\, behaviour\, and learning\, particularly for pupils with autism and related profiles. Practical approaches will be shared to help staff identify masking more effectively and respond in ways that reduce pressure\, build trust\, and support more authentic engagement in school. \n

SUMMARY:Informal Curriculum (CLD) with Peter Imray
DESCRIPTION:For pupils and students with complex learning difficulties (CLD) who are working consistently and over time to the early reaches of the severe learning difficulties spectrum. \nRecognises that there are those at the very complex end of the SLD spectrum who are still ‘learning to be’ rather than ‘learning to do’. Such learners are very likely to have an autism diagnosis\, have fixed and limited areas of interest and be behavioural communicators\, that is\, they will not readily use language as their main means of communication. The depth and complexity of their learning difficulties calls for a separate\, though related\, curriculum model that is the Informal Curriculum. \nThe Equals Informal Curriculum is set in the context of Equals multi-tiered curriculum approach\, recognising that differentiation from England’s (or indeed any) National Curriculum is NOT sufficient to meet the needs of pupils and students with profound\, complex\, severe or global learning difficulties. \nFor these populations\, who are all working consistently and over time below or very near the start of their national curriculum\, curricula NEED TO be different rather than differentiated\, because the way such pupils learn is different\, and often very\, very different from neuro-typical\, conventional developing learners for whom the national curriculum was designed. \n

SUMMARY:My Autistic Outing\, Sharing the Spectrum (part 1) with Dr Jo Grace
DESCRIPTION:Dr Jo Grace is a regular contributor to Equals’ training offer\, a specialist in sensory engagement whose work at The Sensory Projects focuses on the life experiences of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. Many of us also know Jo to be an autistic woman\, something she did not used to reveal in the professional realm. In this series of two sessions Dr Jo will take us on a journey that begins with her ‘outing’ as an autistic person in the professional sphere and ends with her recent contributions to the increasingly tense debate around the autistic spectrum. \nThrough exploring Jo’s deeply personal story\, and the stories of other autistic people who have very high support needs\, we will gain insight into the social and communication differences autistic people experience\, we will touch on sensory differences and develop our understanding of where we can look for reliable advice when seeking to support autistic people with very high support needs\, as well as those who face less barriers to access in life. \nKieran Rose The Autistic Advocate recently described Jo’s work as both subtle and radical saying that “Joanna exists as someone who notices. She notices how people move through the world\, how they adapt\, where they are strained\, and where they are sustained. She resists the temptation to explain people away\, or to translate their lives into lessons and instead\, as is evident in this work\, she trusts you to meet her stories with curiosity and care.” \nThese sessions will be ideal for those who are curious and those who care about autistic people across the spectrum. \nThis is a two-part session – the 2nd part will run on Wednesday 25th November 2026
